Hypnosis/Guided Imagery
Hypnosis is frequently (and unfortunately) associated with gimmicks of stage performers as a form of entertainment. Clucking like a chicken or barking like a dog often comes to mind when people think of being in a hypnotic state. It’s understandable that some people may have reservations about the validity and efficacy of this holistic modality. In fact, hypnosis has been used as a health promotion tool since the times of the ancient Greeks and Egyptians. Today, it is recognized and accepted by the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) as a highly effective tool for modifying behavior and promoting health and healing.
Hypnosis is actually a state of focused attention during which a person experiences a diminished perception of peripheral sensations, thoughts, and feelings. We have all experienced trance or hypnotic states throughout our lives. For example, how many times have you driven to the grocery and have little or no recall of the drive there? This happens because your subconscious mind has stored the knowledge required for driving and the directions to the grocery and it is allowing you to function (drive) on automatic pilot. While in this automatic mode, you are essentially in a trance, or as some prefer to say, you would be experiencing a different level of consciousness. Another example of a trance experience is daydreaming; and as with daydreaming, or the need to respond quickly in traffic, you are always in control. You choose to enter the trance state and you choose when to leave it. Always. The same holds true for a hypnosis session.
Effective hypnosis begins by clarifying your goals. Once established, the session will focus on entering a state of relaxation and focused concentration. Therapeutic suggestions will be interjected during the session to effect positive changes in behavior and/or to treat a range of health conditions. Post-hypnotic suggestions are also given during the induction. They serve to reinforce and support goals and positive suggestions at the conscious level. Specialized hypnosis sessions are available to help you your personal needs: weight loss, smoking, phobias, anxiety and pain management.Hypnosis is an effective tool for assisting people in making positive life changes. It is not meant to replace expert medical care or medications prescribed by your physician.
Imagery is a form of internal communication that connects the sensory system; physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. It incorporates sight, smell, taste, touch, hearing and feelings. Imagery elicits responses from our psyche, central nervous system and our immune system. The connection between our thoughts and different parts of the body and physical problems are well documented. The science of this mind-body-spirit connection is known as psychoneuroimmulogy.Benefits obtained from imagery include relaxation, distraction, pain reduction and personal insights. It is specific to each individual. No two people have the same experience even though they may hear the same induction. The experience holds meaning for the individual.
